Chilean Navy personnel detained in Rapa Nui sexual assault investigation

Two additional members of the Chilean Navy, a corporal and a sailor, have been placed in preventive detention following an investigation into the sexual assault of a 23-year-old woman in Rapa Nui. The incident reportedly occurred on October 2 during a gathering at the Chilean Navy Maritime Garrison facilities. The victim stated she had consumed alcohol and was unable to resist the assault.

These two individuals join two sergeants who were previously detained and formalized for the same crime. The magistrate, Álex Guzmán, ordered that the new detainees be held in a naval facility rather than a standard prison, in accordance with the Military Justice Code. An investigation period of 80 days has been established.

Chilean Deputy Hotuiti Teao has called for a thorough investigation to determine if there were any omissions of aid or cover-ups regarding the incident. He emphasized the need for institutional responses from the Ministry of Defense and the Navy to address the community's demands and indignation.
