Chilean opposition demands refund of $50 million after Bachelet's UN bid
Following Michelle Bachelet’s decision to withdraw her candidacy for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Chilean opposition lawmakers are demanding the reimbursement of 50 million pesos in public funds.
Members of the Republican Party have criticized President Gabriel Boric for promoting a candidacy they deem non-viable. Benjamín Moreno, head of the Republican caucus, argued that those responsible for designing the campaign should personally repay the state for the expenses incurred during international diplomatic efforts. The opposition claims the funding was secured through a specific budget provision established by the Boric administration to support Bachelet’s campaign.
In contrast, former Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren expressed support for Bachelet, stating her international leadership holds value in an adverse global context. President Boric also defended the former president, praising her dignity and courage in facing the candidacy during a period when multilateralism and human rights are under pressure.
