Chilean opposition honors Michelle Bachelet amid political controversy
Opposition parties in Chile have organized an event to honor former President Michelle Bachelet following her candidacy for the United Nations Secretary-General position. The event, scheduled at the Teatro Municipal de La Pintana, is expected to feature speakers including President Gabriel Boric and various parliamentary leaders, aiming to celebrate Bachelet's legacy.
The Republican Party has criticized the gathering, labeling it a “premio de consuelo” (consolation prize) and accusing the opposition of attempting to reposition Bachelet for a future presidential run. Deputy Macarena Santelices has filed a request with the Metropolitan Regional Comptroller to investigate the use of the municipal theater, questioning whether public resources or officials were used in a manner that violates political neutrality and probity standards.
Prior to the public event, Bachelet celebrated her 75th birthday with a private lunch attended by former collaborators and officials. While President Boric expressed birthday wishes via social media, the political tension remains high as the opposition seeks to demonstrate unity through this tribute.
