Chilean opposition splits over security reform negotiations

Internal friction has emerged within the Chilean opposition regarding negotiations for a constitutional security reform. Senator Pedro Araya (PPD) has faced criticism from his own political sector for acting as a mediator between the government and opposition senators, including Arturo Squella (Republicanos) and Andrés Longton (RN), to develop an alternative proposal.

Paulina Vodanovic, president of the Socialist Party (PS), expressed dissatisfaction, stating she was not consulted on the alternative text. Similarly, the PS-PPD-PL Senate Committee has rejected an agreement to support a new text until the government officially withdraws its current security reform project. Senator Juan Luis Castro (PS) emphasized that the Socialismo Democrático sector is not being represented in these negotiations and maintains that the government must retract its existing proposal before any broad conversation regarding a new project can take place.
