Chilean opposition takes control of commission investigating Steinert

The investigative commission of the Chamber of Deputies has been established to probe potential irregularities in the management of former Public Security Minister Trinidad Steinert. Following opposition pressure, the commission's composition was approved unanimously, granting opposition sectors seven of the thirteen seats.

Deputy Raúl Leiva (PS) was elected president of the commission. The primary objective is to summon Steinert, who left her position on May 19, to testify. The commission faces a deadline of August 18 to proceed with a potential constitutional accusation. If such an accusation succeeds in the Senate, Steinert could be barred from holding public office for five years.
