Argentina industrial crisis triggers mass layoffs and emergency calls

Argentina is facing a severe industrial and social crisis, highlighted by mass layoffs and unpaid wages in several sectors. In the House of Deputies, the Economy Commission, led by Deputy Julia Strada, heard testimonies from workers and small business owners describing a 'disastrous' situation caused by import liberalization and economic recession.

A major focal point is the crisis at Granja Tres Arroyos, a leading poultry company. Workers reported being forced to accept 11 percent salary reductions and have not received biweekly payments since July. In some locations, such as Pilar, employees have initiated protests to demand unpaid wages, with reports that the company even offered poultry as a form of payment to settle debts.

In response to the poultry sector's instability, legislators have introduced a bill to declare a one-year occupational emergency for the agro-industrial poultry sector. This proposal includes seeking state assistance through the REPRO program.

Other sectors are also under pressure. In Comodoro Rivadavia, the commerce sector has seen over 2,000 job losses in the last year. Meanwhile, a labor agreement was reached between the UTA and FATAP for a 10.5 percent salary increase for bus drivers in the interior of the country, aimed at preventing further strikes.
