Chilean politicians demand response to Argentine general's comments on Puerto Williams

Political leaders in Chile, including members of the opposition and the Republican Party, are demanding an official response from President José Antonio Kast and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following controversial remarks by retired Argentine Brigadier General Edgar Fernando Calandín.

Calandín suggested in an interview that Argentina possesses the ability to pressure Puerto Williams by cutting off its gas supply, stating the country has the tool to ‘eliminate Puerto Williams’ by closing the gas.

Chilean legislators have rejected these claims, asserting that the city's liquefied gas supply is delivered via sea from Magallanes and does not depend on Argentina. Lawmakers have called for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to formally reject the statements and for the government to strengthen national defense and deterrence capabilities to protect Chilean sovereignty in the southern region.
