Argentina labor market faces crisis amid rising unemployment benefits
Argentina is experiencing a significant labor market crisis characterized by a decline in registered employment and a rise in informality. Unemployment benefit applications increased by 29.4% between January and September 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, with the industry, commerce, and construction sectors identified as the primary drivers of this increase.
Public perception reflects these economic pressures. An AtlasIntel and Bloomberg survey indicates that 75% of the population evaluates the labor situation negatively, while 71% consider the overall economic situation to be poor. Additionally, 55% of respondents believe the economy will worsen over the next six months.
Data shows a growing trend toward informal work. In certain northern regions, labor informality among self-employed workers has exceeded 80%. This shift is accompanied by a contraction in the number of employer companies and a decline in consumer demand, particularly in the manufacturing and supermarket sectors, due to insufficient domestic purchasing power.
