Chilean President Kast announces labor emergency plan

President José Antonio Kast has announced an imminent labor emergency plan to address high unemployment rates in Chile. Following a meeting with ruling party leaders, the government will coordinate efforts between the ministries of Labor, Public Works, Finance, Housing, and the Undersecretary of Regional Development to implement measures such as subsidies during the months of September, October, and November.

Senator Luciano Cruz-Coke noted that the plan aims for short-term results to address unemployment figures that have exceeded 8% for 40 months, impacting women, seniors, and youth. This initiative is described as a broad program rather than a simple relaunch of existing employment agendas.

As the administration reaches its six-month mark, the government is also highlighting security improvements. Interior Undersecretary Máximo Pavez reported a 17% decrease in homicides and a 13.2% reduction in violent robberies. Despite these figures and the approval of a major tax reform, the administration faces internal challenges, with coalition members noting a need for better coordination to resolve citizen urgencies.
