Chile launches 'Chile Despega' plan to create 100,000 jobs

President José Antonio Kast has launched the 'Chile Despega, con más pega' economic plan, an initiative aimed at creating over 100,000 new jobs between 2026 and 2027. The strategy involves mobilizing approximately 1.3 trillion Chilean pesos (roughly 1.35 billion USD) to stimulate economic activity and address rising unemployment rates, which recently reached levels as high as 9.5% to 9.6% in certain quarters.

The plan is built upon four strategic pillars: accelerating public investment and infrastructure projects, boosting direct hiring through expanded subsidies, increasing liquidity for companies by reinforcing FOGAPE credit guarantees, and ensuring effective territorial execution. To support this, the government intends to allocate 300 billion pesos to capitalize FOGAPE and has earmarked significant funds for regional projects, such as 40 billion pesos for La Araucanía and 24 billion pesos for Ñuble.

While the administration emphasizes rapid execution of public works to drive employment, political figures like former Labor Minister Jeannette Jara have called for more ambitious targets, noting that the proposed job creation figures may not fully offset previous job losses. Additionally, regional business groups, such as the CChC in Valparaíso, have urged the government to translate these planned investments into concrete, local construction projects to combat high regional unemployment.
