Chilean President Kast faces social demands and signs Reconstruction Law

In Chile, President José Antonio Kast is facing demands from social leaders regarding the implementation of the 'Ley de Extraviados' and the status of social programs. During a visit to Valdivia, representatives from the Extraviados Paillaco group urged the government to expedite the regulations for the 2022 law, noting that without specific regulations for Article 14, the law cannot function effectively. Additionally, leaders from the regional table of Rural Women requested the reversal of the decision to close the Foundation for the Promotion and Development of Women (Prodemu), citing concerns for the continuity of essential programs for female agricultural workers.

Separately, the Chilean government is nearing the implementation of the Reconstruction Law. President Kast has signed the decree, which now only awaits publication in the Official Gazette to take effect. The law follows a complex legislative process involving the Constitutional Court. While expected to stimulate the construction and real estate sectors, the law has caused tension regarding the removal of compensation for municipalities facing revenue losses from property tax changes, a situation that may impact local finances during regional emergencies.
