Chilean Psychologist Pilar Sordo Says Human Personality Continually Evolves

Chilean psychologist and author Pilar Sordo explained that human personality is not static; people "cambiamos todo el tiempo" – we change all the time – and their character evolves in response to external circumstances such as relationships, crises and achievements. She emphasized that internal self‑talk shapes self‑esteem and resilience, noting that "cómo te hablás define tu capacidad de resiliencia ante la incertidumbre" (how you talk to yourself defines your capacity for resilience).

Sordo warned that excessive reliance on visual technology is eroding everyday vocabulary, which she says can lead to emotional distress: "nos enfermamos por falta de vocabulario" (we get sick because of lack of vocabulary). She argued that accepting pain and discomfort is essential for growth, stating that the more one rebels against pain, the longer it stays with them.

These observations were shared during a recent conversation series organized by the newspaper La Nación, where Sordo highlighted the importance of integrating external changes with inner reality for personal development.
