Chile prepares formal protest over Magallanes Strait comments

Diplomatic tensions have escalated between Chile and Argentina following controversial statements regarding the Magallanes Strait. The Chilean Chamber of Deputies has agreed to issue a formal note of protest in response to remarks made by Argentine Senator Patricia Bullrich, who suggested that Argentina should obtain “control” over the strait. Although Bullrich later clarified her comments referred to the Beagle Channel, the Chilean legislature is coordinating a response with the Senate.

Chilean officials have reaffirmed their stance on territorial integrity. President José Antonio Kast stated that Chilean sovereignty over the Magallanes Strait is “non-negotiable,” citing existing international treaties. Additionally, Biminister Claudio Alvarado emphasized that the government does not neglect any part of its territory and remains committed to marking and defending its sovereignty.

These developments follow previous comments from Argentine military leadership regarding the strategic importance of the region as a “bioceanic key” between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
