Chile regional budget dispute leads to legislative deadlock
A significant budgetary conflict has emerged in Chile as regional governors and the central government face a deadlock over the 2027 Budget Bill. The dispute centers on a proposed reduction of approximately 250 billion pesos in funding for the country's 16 regional governments.
Following a tie vote in the Fourth Mixed Budget Subcommission regarding Partida 31, which finances regional administrations, the vote has been postponed. This deadlock follows intense negotiations between the Association of Regional Governors of Chile (Agorechi) and the Ministry of Finance. While the administration of President José Antonio Kast cites fiscal responsibility and execution criteria for the adjustments, regional leaders argue the cuts will cripple local infrastructure, health, security, and social programs.
A tentative agreement has been reached to postpone the decision, allowing a ten-day window for technical teams from Agorechi and the Directorate of Presupplements (Dipres) to negotiate a new proposal. In some specific regions, such as Ñuble, initial proposed cuts of 11 billion pesos have already been reconsidered following political intervention, with officials now aiming for a smaller reduction or a budget aligned with central government growth.
