Chilean regions transition to pellet heating to improve energy security and air quality

In Chile, regional efforts are underway to transition from wood-burning heating to more efficient pellet systems to improve energy security and reduce air pollution.

In the Aysén region, authorities report that pellet availability remains stable to meet household heating demands. The Ecomas plant near Coyhaique is currently operational, producing between 40 and 60 tons daily. To support this transition, local technical training has been prioritized, with 24 individuals in Coyhaique and Puerto Aysén recently obtaining ChileValora certification for pellet heater installation and maintenance.

In Temuco, a municipal initiative in collaboration with Cenco Mall aims to replace 192 wood-burning heaters with high-efficiency pellet equipment. This environmental compensation measure, linked to the expansion of Cenco Mall, is expected to reduce annual particulate matter (MP10) emissions by approximately 5.14 tons. The project aligns with the Atmospheric Decontamination Plan for Temuco and Padre Las Casas to mitigate respiratory health risks caused by smog.
