Chilean regulator warns of electric vehicle charging compatibility issues

Chile’s National Consumer Service (SERNAC) has issued a warning regarding information gaps and compatibility issues between electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles and the country’s charging infrastructure. A technical monitoring report, conducted in coordination with the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications, the Ministry of Energy, and the Superintendency of Electricity and Fuels (SEC), identified significant discrepancies in the market.

While 90.3% of the market offers Type 2 connectors for slow charging—which are compatible with 98.31% of public slow-charging stations—a problem exists with the GB/T standard. Vehicles using the GB/T connector represent less than 5.6% of the market supply, yet they currently lack compatible public fast-charging infrastructure in Chile. This limitation effectively restricts owners of these vehicles to domestic charging, significantly impacting their daily autonomy and mobility.
