Acosta Ñu Pediatric Hospital faces mass specialist resignations

A massive wave of resignations has hit the Hospital General Pediátrico Niños de Acosta Ñu in Paraguay following a failed five-day national medical strike. The strike, led by the National Medical Union (Sinamed), sought salary readjustments not updated since 2012, better supplies, and the formal appointment of temporary staff.

Medical specialists have submitted resignations for 141 of the hospital's 164 doctors, representing 86% of the specialized workforce. The impact is particularly severe in critical areas: 95.5% of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) staff and 100% of the medical team for the Cystic Fibrosis Program have resigned. Additionally, eight specialties, including Ophthalmology, Gynecology, and Pediatric Surgery, have seen 100% of their professionals sign resignation notices.

Negotiations with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Economy concluded without an agreement. Government officials stated that financing the 76% salary increase demanded by the union is impossible. Sinamed has announced it will convene an assembly to plan further industrial actions.
