Chilean researchers study forest ecosystem health and restoration

Researchers in Chile are conducting studies to address ecosystem degradation and the impacts of drought on native forests. Dr. Sergio Espinoza Meza of the Universidad Católica del Maule is co-investigating a project through 2029, funded by CONAF, aimed at the successful repopulation of degraded sclerophyllous forests in central Chile. The initiative focuses on developing models for the propagation and planting of companion species to combat the reduced natural regeneration capacity of these ecosystems.

In southern Chile, a separate study published in ‘Insect Conservation and Diversity’ highlights the Magellanic woodpecker as a vital ecological indicator. Research conducted by scientists from the Universidad de Las Américas shows that the foraging activity of these birds is directly linked to the diversity of saproxylic beetles in living trees. The study found that trees excavated by woodpeckers host higher abundances of predators, wood-borers, and mycophagous insects, making the bird a biological ‘thermometer’ for forest health.
