Chilean Science Minister promotes Magallanes as Antarctic research hub

Chilean Science Minister Ximena Lincolao has identified the Magallanes region as a strategic geopolitical asset for Antarctic studies and scientific development. During a public report in the region, Lincolao emphasized the importance of utilizing high-level infrastructure, specifically highlighting the Viel icebreaker, which is capable of carrying up to 100 scientists on expeditions.

Lincolao acknowledged that the Cabo de Hornos Subantarctic Center in Puerto Williams has been underutilized despite its significant investment. She stated that the Ministry aims to attract more researchers, increase scientific production, and improve funding to ensure that such high-quality infrastructure is used to its full potential. The government intends to focus on biodiversity, salmon farming, and Antarctic research to transform the region into a scientific engine.

The Ministry has allocated over 520 billion pesos in financing through the Ministry and ANID, with a commitment to directing high-impact research toward the regions.
