Chile advances industrial symbiosis and maritime economic initiatives
Chile is implementing several initiatives to optimize its maritime and industrial sectors. In La Araucanía, more than 20 companies at the La Araucanía Industrial and Technological Park are launching a Clean Production Agreement. This 18-month project aims to establish industrial symbiosis, allowing companies to convert waste into raw materials and share infrastructure, water, and energy to reduce operational costs.
In the maritime sector, SalmonChile is preparing to present a new study regarding the economic and territorial impact of salmon farming. The research seeks to provide updated data on the industry’s contribution to the national and regional GDP, as well as its role in employment and SME integration. Simultaneously, the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) has opened a public consultation to develop a National Policy for the Responsible Consumption of Seafood, aiming to increase per capita consumption in the country.
Furthermore, small-scale artisanal fishing and aquaculture entrepreneurs from various regions recently showcased products at the Espacio Food Service 2026 exhibition. On a global scale, research involving Chilean academics highlights that while Chile is a leader in salmon and mussel exports, high export volumes can create domestic market tensions by increasing local prices and affecting availability.
