Chilean secret support for UK in Falklands War detailed in new book

A new book titled ‘El pacto perfecto’ (The Perfect Pact), authored by investigative journalists Daniel Avendaño and Mauricio Palma, details secret Chilean support for the United Kingdom during the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas War.

Based on classified documentation and interviews with former military personnel, the book explores how the Chilean military junta, led by figures such as Admiral José Toribio Merino, provided intelligence and assistance to the British. The authors utilized transparency requests in both Chile and Argentina to uncover details regarding the clandestine cooperation that occurred during the 73-day conflict.

The research highlights the complexities of the era, noting that while some aspects of Chilean involvement were partially known, the book aims to address previously undisclosed information and ‘loose ends’ regarding the relationship between the Chilean government and the British forces during the war.
