Chilean seismic history and resilience through major earthquakes

Academic and historical reflections in Chile have highlighted the long-term impact of major seismic events on the nation's infrastructure and social resilience. The Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (USM) recently held a seminar to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the 1906 Valparaíso earthquake. Research conducted between 2019 and 2023 revealed that the reconstruction process involved a period of experimentation, blending traditional techniques with new materials until reinforced concrete became a standard solution for seismic resistance.

Historical accounts also point to the 1960 Valdivia earthquake, the most powerful ever recorded at a magnitude of 9.5, as a defining moment for Chilean national identity. Despite the massive destruction and loss of life, the country successfully hosted the 1962 FIFA World Cup. This feat was encapsulated by organizer Carlos Dittborn’s famous phrase, “because we have nothing, we will do everything,” which became a symbol of the nation's ability to rebuild following natural disasters.
