Chilean Senate approves mid-water net use for squid fishing

The Chilean Senate's Maritime Interests, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Commission has approved a project that would allow the industrial use of mid-water nets for catching squid (jibia) off the coasts of the Ñuble and Biobío regions.

The proposal, identified as Bulletin No. 18.173-21, is limited to shipowners who held valid authorizations as of February 16, 2019. It does not increase the global quota, change the distribution between artisanal and industrial sectors, or allow new vessels to enter the industry.

Inpesca has supported the measure, citing data from the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP) which suggests that mid-water nets result in low bycatch. According to these records, squid accounted for 99.87% of targeted captures in 2017. However, artisanal fishermen in Lebu and local authorities have rejected the initiative and announced planned mobilizations in protest.
