Chilean Senate approves political system reform report
The Chilean Senate has approved a report from a Joint Commission aimed at resolving legislative differences regarding a reform to the political system. The reform seeks to modify various legal bodies to promote governability and political representativeness.
A key component of the agreement requires political parties to include explicit condemnations of totalitarian systems and the use of violence as a method of political action within their statements of principles. The Senate approved this measure with 28 votes in favor, 3 against, and 5 abstentions.
The initiative now awaits a vote in the Chamber of Deputies before it can be officially dispatched by Congress. While the majority supported the inclusion of the anti-violence and anti-totalitarian clauses, some senators suggested the text could have more closely aligned with constitutional language regarding the right to free association.
