Chilean Senator Daniel Núñez unable to attend UN assembly due to U.S. visa issues
Chilean Senator Daniel Núñez was unable to travel to New York to attend an Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) assembly held alongside the 81st United Nations General Assembly due to issues obtaining a U.S. visa.
Núñez was designated to replace Senator Francisco Huenchumilla, who withdrew from the trip for personal reasons. While some reports suggest the visa was formally denied, Núñez stated that U.S. authorities indicated they would not expedite the processing of his application in time for the event. The Senator has requested clarification from the U.S. Embassy and intends to seek an institutional statement from the Chilean Senate.
Senator Loreto Carvajal ultimately represented the delegation in the activity. The incident has raised questions regarding diplomatic relations and the processing of visas for Chilean officials.
