Chilean Senator Keitel criticizes new cyclist restrictions at Cerro San Cristóbal

Chilean Senator Sebastián Keitel has criticized Housing and Urbanism Minister Iván Poduje over new restrictions for cyclists at Cerro San Cristóbal in the Metropolitan Region. The measures, scheduled to begin in December, include a mandatory prior registration system and the required use of reflective vests with identification codes.

Minister Poduje stated the measures aim to control cyclist speeds to protect pedestrians, including children and the elderly, from safety risks. In response, Senator Keitel described the requirements as “vergonzoso” (shameful), arguing that the government should prioritize education and better signage over sanctions and bureaucratic hurdles. Keitel expressed concern that such policies might discourage physical activity in a country with high sedentary rates.

The disagreement escalated into a public exchange on social media. Poduje accused the senator of “speaking without knowledge,” while Keitel criticized the minister’s conduct, suggesting he should focus on his ministerial duties rather than political campaigning. Keitel proposed that instead of new restrictions, the authorities should strengthen enforcement and penalties for dangerous behaviors within the park.
