Chilean Senator warns of organized crime gains

Chilean Senator Carlos Kuschel has warned that organized crime has won several battles in the country, despite improvements in certain security indicators. He highlighted vulnerabilities in land and port border controls, describing the nation as being “totally open to the world” and noting that certain criminal mafias have managed to penetrate public sector institutions.

Regarding the role of the Armed Forces in public security, Kuschel emphasized that their primary purpose is external defense. He argued that military training differs significantly from police training, noting that soldiers are prepared for extreme combat scenarios that are distinct from the duties of domestic security forces like the Carabineros.

Addressing the issue of an aging population, the senator described it as a matter of state importance. He noted that increased life expectancy is creating economic challenges, particularly regarding pension systems, as citizens are living longer than current legislative frameworks were designed to sustain.
