Argentina Mother's Day retail sales fall for fifth consecutive year

Retail sales for Mother's Day in Argentina saw a 1.4% year-on-year decline at constant prices, according to a report by the Confederation of Argentine Medium Enterprises (CAME). This marks the fifth consecutive year of declines for this commercial date, highlighting ongoing challenges in consumer spending due to tight household budgets.

While promotions, discounts, and installment financing plans helped maintain some liquidity and operational activity, they failed to reverse the trend of cautious consumption. Consumers increasingly prioritized lower-value items. The average ticket was $63,197, with significant variations across sectors.

Sector performance was mixed: four of the six surveyed categories experienced declines, led by home appliances and audio/video equipment (-3.6%), followed by cosmetics and perfumery (-3.2%), electronic accessories and cell phones (-3.2%), and footwear (-2.2%). Conversely, stationery saw a 3.4% increase as consumers sought more affordable gift options, and clothing showed a marginal growth of 0.1%.

In the province of San Juan, the decline was more pronounced, with sales dropping 2.5% year-on-year. Local commerce leaders noted that this reflects a broader trend of nearly 20 months of continuous decline in the region.
