Chilean Socialist Party files ethics complaint against Deputy Javier Olivares
The Socialist Party (PS) of Chile has announced it will file a formal complaint with the Chamber of Deputies' Ethics Commission against Deputy Javier Olivares of the People's Party (PDG). The complaint follows controversial remarks made by Olivares regarding former President Michelle Bachelet and presidential candidate Evelyn Matthei.
Olivares reportedly used derogatory language in response to Bachelet's comments regarding a potential third presidential bid, suggesting she follow Matthei's example by focusing on domestic tasks like cooking. Socialist deputies Nelson Venegas and Marcos Ilabaca characterized the comments as sexist, discriminatory, and an attempt to exclude women from political debate by relegating them to traditional domestic roles.
Separately, political analysis suggests Bachelet's potential return to politics is being viewed as a move to unify the progressive movement against the rise of the radical right. Recent polling indicates Bachelet maintains a positive image of 47% and holds a significant base among women and senior citizens, despite the long lead time before the next presidential election.
