Chilean software developer demand rises amid AI integration

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the professional landscape for software developers in Chile. While AI can now generate code and detect errors, the demand for human programmers remains high. According to data from the SENCE Employment Exchange Analysis System (SABE), 5,387 job postings for software developers were published in Chile during the first half of 2026, marking the first time a digital occupation has entered the country's top 20 most demanded roles.

The median salary for these positions reached 1.3 million pesos, a 3.8% increase compared to the same period in 2025 when adjusted for inflation. However, the nature of the work is evolving; employers are increasingly looking for professionals who can go beyond repetitive coding tasks to provide validation, supervision, and business understanding.

Experts suggest that the challenge lies in how AI is integrated into education and the workplace. Rather than prohibiting the technology, there is a growing emphasis on teaching critical use and understanding the underlying problems. Professionals who can combine technical knowledge with communication, reflection, and business processes are expected to remain most relevant in this changing market.
