Chilean study links dietary fiber to reduced alcohol withdrawal symptoms

Researchers at the Universidad Autónoma de Chile have identified the gut-brain axis as a potential pathway for addressing persistent symptoms of depression during alcohol abstinence. A study published in ‘Frontiers in Nutrition’ suggests that dietary fiber may help reduce inflammatory signals that reach the brain by influencing microbiota and the intestinal barrier.

The research indicates that chronic alcohol consumption can weaken the intestinal barrier, allowing bacterial substances to enter the bloodstream and trigger systemic inflammatory responses. This process may affect mood-regulating mechanisms, such as serotonin and dopamine, contributing to symptoms like anxiety, depression, and intense cravings during recovery.
