Chilean Supreme Court clears Mexican brewery to register Corona brand

The Supreme Court of Chile has ruled in favor of the Mexican brewery Cervecería Modelo de México, allowing it to register the ‘Corona’ brand for beers and non-alcoholic beverages in the country.

The unanimous decision ends a legal dispute that began in March 2020 when the defunct Chilean retailer Multitienda Corona opposed the registration. The court confirmed a previous ruling by the Industrial Property Tribunal, stating that there is no risk of consumer confusion or error between the two brands. The court noted that the Mexican company holds existing international registrations for various services and that the Chilean retailer’s trademark belonged to a different product category.

The ruling comes as the Chilean retailer, which operated since 1955, is currently undergoing liquidation processes following its closure in July 2025.
