Venezuela court acquits activist Rocío San Miguel in Brazalete Blanco case

A Venezuelan court has acquitted human rights activist and Control Ciudadano director Rocío San Miguel in the Brazalete Blanco case. The Third Court of First Instance in Terrorism Matters issued the ruling, declaring her free of criminal responsibility regarding the charges of conspiracy and terrorism that led to her detention in February 2024.

While San Miguel was acquitted, the tribunal issued convictions for several military personnel involved in the case. Retired Army Captain Ányelo Julio Heredia Gervacio was sentenced to 18 years in prison for conspiracy. Lieutenant Colonel Guillermo Enrique César Siero and Ronald Alejandro Ferrer Vera both received 12-year sentences. Other individuals received three-year sentences for the crime of concealment.

San Miguel, who holds Spanish citizenship, had previously been released from the El Helicoide detention center under precautionary measures before traveling to Spain. She expressed that the decision ratifies her innocence and marks the end of a difficult chapter. Supporters and political figures have hailed the verdict as a victory for the rule of law and human rights in Venezuela.
