Chilean surgeon performs remote robotic surgery in Brazil

A remote radical prostatectomy was successfully performed on a patient at Hospital do Rim in Goiânia, Brazil, controlled by an oncological urologist located in Santiago, Chile. The procedure, conducted approximately 3,000 kilometers away, utilized the Toumai robotic surgical system developed by MicroPort.

To ensure surgical precision and manage latency, the operation relied on a dedicated communication infrastructure including two independent fiber optic connections, a redundant 5G network, and a dedicated VPN with an exclusive IP. The latency between the surgeon's commands and the robot's response was maintained below 200 milliseconds.

While the specialist operated remotely from Chile, local urologists Marcelo Túlio Cruvinel and Rodrigo Cruvinel were present at the hospital in Brazil to assist the patient. This event marks the first telesurgery connecting the state of Goiás to Chile, as well as the first remote prostatectomy performed at the Hospital do Rim.
