Chilean UDI party proposes police support agenda and INDH budget cuts

Members of the Chilean Independent Democratic Union (UDI) party have proposed two significant budgetary measures for the 2027 fiscal year.

First, lawmakers are calling for the inclusion of the ‘Martyrs of Chile Agenda’ to support families of police officers killed in the line of duty. Following the death of Corporal Cristopher Aguilera Fernández, legislators requested permanent economic, labor, and social protections. The proposal includes life pensions calculated based on the rank the officer would have achieved by retirement, increased life insurance, educational funding for children, and housing assistance for surviving spouses.

Second, UDI legislators are seeking to drastically reduce the funding of the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH). The group has proposed assigning the institute a symbolic budget of only 1,000 Chilean pesos. Lawmakers argued for a deep review or the closure of the organization, accusing it of manipulating information regarding human rights violations during the 2019 social unrest. They contend that the institute's claims are contradicted by court rulings and official prosecution data.
