Chilean youth centers implement educational initiatives for higher education access

Juvenile detention centers in Chile are implementing specialized programs to prepare incarcerated youth for the Prueba de Acceso a la Educación Superior (PAES), the national university entrance exam.

In Limache, 15 young people at the Centro de Internación Provisoria y Régimen Cerrado (IP-IRC) are receiving inter-institutional support. This includes assistance from the Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación to obtain digital credentials and guidance in completing the Formulario Único de Acreditación Socioeconómica (FUAS) to apply for scholarships and grants.

In Coronel, nine youths at the Centro de Internación Provisoria y Régimen Cerrado (CIP-CRC) participated in an unprecedented official PAES practice exam. This initiative was made possible through a strategic alliance with the Universidad de Concepción (UdeC) and the Amulen Project. The training covered reading comprehension, history, social sciences, mathematics, and science to familiarize students with the exam format and timing.
