Chilean 20-year-old dies crossing Albanian‑Greek border

Two Chilean youths, aged 20 and 22, attempted an illegal crossing from Albania into Greece via a mountainous trail in the Thesprotia region near Sagiada. After several hours of walking in extreme heat, the 20‑year‑old lost consciousness and collapsed. He was rescued, taken by ambulance to the Hospital of Filiates and was pronounced dead. The 22‑year‑old reached the main road, stopped a passing truck driver, and secured help; he was also taken to the Hospital of Filiates where he is being treated for dehydration and exhaustion.

Albanian and Greek police, emergency services, EKAB and fire units responded to the scene. Preliminary assessments point to dehydration and heatstroke as the likely cause of death, with a forensic autopsy pending. The incident occurred at the Albanian‑Greek border in the Thesprotia area.
