Chile’s Alexis Salas and Gonzalo Navarro Recognized for Scientific Leadership
Dr. Alexis Salas Burgos, a pharmacology professor at the University of Concepción, was elected to the Council of the Civil Society (COSOC) of the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) for the 2026‑2028 term. In this advisory, non‑binding role he will represent the interests of researchers from the central‑south macrozone, promote inter‑ministerial collaboration, and push for greater decentralisation of science policy.
Dr. Gonzalo Navarro of the University of Chile received two major international honours: the Test of Time Award for sustained impact in algorithms and data structures, and election as a Fellow of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB). His work on sequence search, pattern matching and compressed indexing underpins large‑scale genomic analyses, strengthening Chile’s profile in computational biology.
Both recognitions highlight Chile’s growing influence in scientific research and its integration of academic expertise into national policy and global bio‑informatics communities.
