Chile's Calama and Peru's Chiclayo launch major urban renovation projects

In Calama, Chile, the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism (Minvu) has prepared the Avenida Ferrocarril upgrade, a 2.1‑kilometre corridor that will include bike lanes, green spaces, new lighting, railway crossings and additional road links. The plan, costing more than 12 billion Chilean pesos, has completed detailed engineering and is seeking funding for construction slated for 2027‑2028. Mayor Eliecer Chamorro has called for a citizen consultation, saying the design lacked community input and urging the inclusion of safety features such as a pedestrian bridge near Hospital Carlos Cisterna, with an expectation that Codelco share financing.

Separately, in Chiclayo, Peru, the Diego Ferré sector is being modernised under a S/68 million “Obras por Impuestos” scheme financed by Interbank and Inkafarma and executed by URBI Proyectos (Grupo Intercorp). The project adds upgraded streets, sidewalks, parks, lighting and urban equipment, improving mobility, safety and the city’s image, especially along the “Ruta del Papa León XIV” that links to the airport and supports tourism.
