Chile's Central Bank pushes instant payment integration for merchants

The Central Bank of Chile is advancing a public‑private agenda to embed instant‑payment transfers into retail point‑of‑sale systems. The plan would let consumers pay directly from bank accounts and enable merchants to receive funds within seconds, reducing the need for customers to enter account details. Walter Campos, general manager of Yuno for Latin America, said the challenge now is to integrate this method with existing cards, digital wallets and other payment options without adding operational complexity.

At the same time, Bipay explained how bank‑card payments work on buses in Antofagasta, Calama and Tocopilla. The EMV system groups all daily trips into a single charge that is processed overnight, so passengers see one aggregated debit on their statements. Bipay advises users to look for the “PAGO: bipaybuses” description and to contact their bank if the charge appears unfamiliar.
