Chile's Central Education Authorities Launch School Security and Violence‑Prevention Plans

The Servicio Local de Educación Pública (SLEP) Costa Central is allocating more than $70 million to strengthen security in public schools. Measures include video surveillance, alarms, exterior lighting, beacons and nightly patrols aimed at preventing theft, unauthorized entry and other threats to school infrastructure and continuity of education. SLEP executive director Nelson Zárate Hervera emphasized rapid action to protect students, families and educational staff.

In parallel, the Municipality of Estación Central unveiled a communal plan to prevent school violence. The initiative involves coordinated efforts among parents, students, SLEP, municipal authorities and the Subsecretaría de Prevención del Delito. It provides dedicated patrol vehicles for 27 prioritized schools, funds for cameras and community alarms, and encourages local organizations to apply for preventive resources. Mayor Felipe Muñoz and subsecretary Gonzalo Guerrero highlighted the importance of collaborative prevention to ensure safer learning environments.
