Chile's Chamber approves Bruma report, paving way for new maritime safety law

Chile's lower house unanimously approved the final report of the Special Investigative Commission on the Bruma case, which examined the disappearance of the fishing vessel Bruma and the loss of seven artisanal fishermen. The report highlighted critical shortcomings in the national search and rescue (SAR) system, including delayed activation of protocols, limited technological resources, and poor inter‑agency coordination.

Deputy Jorge Guzmán, a member of the commission and author of the proposed Bruma Law, said the findings will form the basis of legislation aimed at strengthening emergency procedures, improving SAR capabilities, and safeguarding artisanal fishers. The draft law seeks to update regulations, enhance equipment, and ensure faster response to maritime incidents, with the goal of preventing future tragedies similar to the Bruma disaster.
