Chile Senate moves school admission reform to second reading
The Chilean Chamber of Deputies approved a reform of the Sistema de Admisión Escolar (SAE) with 111 votes in favor, 28 against and one abstention. The bill seeks to increase the weight of merit and reduce the role of random allocation in school admissions. It introduces a mutual‑choice mechanism that allows high‑demand schools to set priority criteria such as sibling attendance, adherence to the school project, specific aptitudes and being a child of school staff or alumni. The reform maintains a single online platform managed by the Ministry of Education, bans fees and the collection of socioeconomic data, and keeps a random allocation component for cases where priority criteria do not resolve all vacancies. Minister of Education María Paz Arzola said the current system has been in place for ten years and needs updating. Deputy Ximena Naranjo praised the vote as a response to families’ demand for greater participation. The project was sent to the Senate for a second constitutional debate, where it will face further discussion and voting.
