Chillán municipal cultural corporation faces 3% budget cut

The Municipal Cultural Corporation of Chillán was notified by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage of a 3% reduction in its 2026 budget. The cut will directly affect financing for cultural programs across the Ñuble region, forcing the corporation to modify its existing agreement for the year.

Director Virna Veas said the reduction threatens the corporation’s work on cultural decentralisation, especially in a region with high rurality, unemployment and limited access to the arts. She stressed that the organization will seek alternative funding, strengthen public‑private partnerships, and explore creative solutions to maintain its activities.

The budget adjustment is part of wider cuts to the national culture ministry, with some programs facing up to a 10% reduction. The impact also reaches the Teatro Municipal de Chillán, which is celebrating its 10‑year anniversary after reopening.
