Chile's CNTV imposes fines on La Red and Canal 13 for financial and sensationalism breaches

The National Television Council (CNTV) of Chile imposed a monetary penalty of 500 monthly tax units (UTM) on private broadcaster La Red after the station failed to submit its financial statements for the fiscal year ending 31 December 2025 within the legally required 90‑day period. The regulator noted that La Red had previously been sanctioned for the same omission in 2024 and 2025, classifying the conduct as recurrent, but it chose not to suspend the channel’s concession to avoid disrupting service to viewers in 16 localities.

In a separate case, the Santiago Court of Appeals upheld CNTV’s 80 UTM fine against Canal 13 SpA for broadcasting a sensationalist news segment during protected‑hour programming. The court affirmed that the segment repeatedly showed graphic footage of a shooting, including the exact moment a victim was shot and the accompanying audio, exceeding the informational need and constituting abusive presentation of facts. The ruling confirmed the fine as consistent with the regulator’s rules on sensationalism.
