Chile's DIPOLE program studies light pollution and warming in Antarctica

Chile's DIPOLE (Disrupting Polar Ecosystems: Light Pollution may alter the Ecological Effects of Global Warming) program, funded by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) under the Ministry of Science, is conducting the first integrated investigation of how artificial illumination and climate change together affect the continent's coastal ecosystems. Field work in sub‑Antarctic and Antarctic intertidal and pelagic zones is combined with laboratory experiments to assess impacts on key species such as macroalgae, invertebrates and marine vertebrates.

Project director Dr. José Pulgar of Universidad Andrés Bello said, “Antarctica can no longer be understood as an ecosystem completely free of human influence; multiple anthropogenic stressors are acting simultaneously on Antarctic biodiversity, making it urgent to understand their biological effects.” The research aims to provide robust scientific evidence to inform conservation strategies and public policies within the Antarctic Treaty System.

The initiative highlights the growing relevance of light‑pollution research beyond temperate regions, linking it directly to the accelerating warming experienced in the polar environment.
