Chile's Fisheries Drive Value-Added Production and New Export Markets

Three artisanal fishing unions from Quellón toured productive coastal sites in the Coquimbo, Valparaíso and O'Higgins regions to study successful value‑added models and denomination‑of‑origin initiatives. The trip, organized by the Municipality of Quellón and funded by the Instituto de Desarrollo Sustentable de la Pesca Artesanal (Indespa), aimed to shift from raw‑material sales to higher‑value products, incorporating new technologies and cooperative processing.

In parallel, Landes Mussels, a Chiloé‑based aquaculture firm, reported its seventh sustainability report, noting the recent approval to export mussels to Russia and continued audits under the ASC Bivalves standard for its Chilean farms. The company also reinforced its presence in the United States market and installed inclusive environmental signage in four wetlands of the Dalcahue municipality, underscoring its commitment to local community engagement and environmental education.
