Chile's La Tirana Festival attracts up to 300,000 pilgrims

The annual Fiesta de La Tirana, held from July 10‑20, 2026 in the small town of La Tirana (Pozo Almonte, Tarapacá Region), transforms the village of about 800‑1,200 residents into a pilgrimage hub for up to 300,000 visitors. More than 200 religious dances—including diabladas, morenadas, gitanos and others—are performed by groups from across northern Chile. The celebration coincides with the centenary of the Virgin of Carmen’s coronation as patron saint of Chile.

Airbnb data show a surge in travel interest: searches for La Tirana rose nearly 60% year‑on‑year, driven largely by Millennials, while searches for Iquique and Arica increased about 40% and 20% respectively. Visitors combine the festival with tours of the region’s landscapes and cuisine. The event also features a special Eucharist led by Bishop Isauro Covili Linfati, who prayed for indigenous communities and highlighted the festival’s blend of Andean mining traditions and Catholic devotion.
