Chile's Los Lagos Region Sea Urchin Exports Surge in Asian Markets

Exports of sea urchin from Chile's Los Lagos Region rose 169.9% in the first half of 2026, reaching US$10 million. The region accounted for US$10 million of the country's total US$14 million sea‑urchin shipments during that period, with Japan remaining the top destination followed by China, South Korea and Taiwan. ProChile, the Chilean trade promotion agency, is assisting producers to compete on origin, quality and gastronomic value rather than price, leveraging existing free‑trade agreements that grant zero tariffs, especially with China. Ricardo Arriagada, ProChile's regional director, highlighted growing demand from high‑end restaurants, sushi bars and e‑commerce platforms for premium marine products that offer health, safety and distinctive culinary experiences.

The growth reflects broader trends in premium seafood consumption in Asia and the strategic push by Chile to diversify export markets beyond traditional buyers. ProChile’s support includes market research, branding assistance and facilitation of trade logistics to sustain the momentum into 2027.
