Chile's Los Vilos and Peru's Chiclayo clamp down on noise complaints

In Los Vilos, Chile, Mayor Christian Gross Hidalgo formally requested the Superintendency of the Environment to inspect backup power generators after residents complained that constant noise, especially at night, disrupted sleep and affected mental health. The mayor emphasized that "it is necessary to reconcile the operation of this infrastructure with the community’s wellbeing, ensuring companies respect current environmental regulations."

In Chiclayo, Peru, municipal authorities closed the Santeón nightclub and other venues after multiple complaints about persistent nighttime noise. Officials cited illegal operation without a license and safety violations. The Subdirector of Fiscalization noted that inspections confirmed the venue remained open despite previous closures, stating that “the establishment continues commercial activity despite a temporary closure order.” Residents demanded permanent shutdowns of noisy establishments.

Both municipalities are pursuing stricter enforcement to protect residents from sound pollution.
